GIVEN CIRCUMSTANCES

STUDIO VISIT

According to Konstantin Stanislavski, “given circumstances” are those circumstances, situations, living conditions where actors of a theatre or film production, should place themselves in their imagination. Lately, I was lacking a proper studio, but to be honest I never considered it to be a problem. To develop a project, I need a piece of paper and a black ink roller, and the process can start. I put myself in Stanislavski’s “given circumstances” and confront, expand or rebuild them, firstly conceptually then physically. For now, I have a table in Vienna and a table in Hamburg, and upcoming projects in different places. The area I originally come from is steppe, which used to be a common habitat for nomad folks — somehow, I feel this spirit resonates in me.

(...) I enjoy encountering the spaces, constructing a dramaturgy of my objects within them and then leave them — putting these experiences in my mental archive. For this studio visit I decided to pick a project which has embodied my wishes of working process, a site-specific installation for Spazio Serra ‘Le città felici hanno l’architettura’, showcased just before the world entered the lockdown. I also included the pictures from a ceramic workshop where I went daily when I was in Hamburg, spending there hours and hours, watching documentary movies about modernist architects or listening to podcasts about Russian avant-garde while kneading different clays. As long as my show ‘Cosmic Poetics’ in Einstellungsraum is on, I drop by quite often to see how my works function there and what is the quality of the negative space or air within it. I also watch people passing by and looking.
